What is "Academic" Writing?
According to Lennie Irvin, the success with academic writing depends on the writer´s understanding of what is being done, and the way in which the writing approach is produced. The most important thing that a beginner writer should learn to develop is the "writer´s sense" about communicating within the writing situation, with its own codes and conventions. Furthermore, knowledge of research skills, ability to read complex texts, understanding of key concepts and strategies for synthesizing, analyzing, and responding critically to new information are required to achieve high levels of literacy. It is necessary to avoid summary and mere explanation
in this kind of writing. To make an argument and to arrive at some insights about the subject matter
are the implicit expectations to fulfill.
The author mentions three characteristics of Academic Writing. The first one is the clear evidence in writing that the writer has been persistent, open-minded and disciplined in
study. The second one is the dominance of reason over emotions or sensual perception. The last one is an imagined reader who is coolly rational, reading for information, and intending to formulate a reasoned response.
Eventually, the success in academic writing will take a lot of thinking, hard work and practice.
